Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Learn how MobileMammo NW is increasing access to early breast cancer detection across the South Sound and beyond.

When will operations begin?
We anticipate commencing operations in the summer of 2026.

Are the local health systems involved?
Yes, both have been invited to participate.

Why mobile mammography?
Many women face barriers that make getting a mammogram difficult — such as travel distance, cost, or time away from work. Our mobile coach eliminates those barriers by delivering screening services directly to neighborhoods, workplaces, and community events.

Who operates the mobile coach?
The program is operated by MobileMammo NW, a 501(c)(3) organization created by the TRA Medical Imaging Foundation. All mammography services are provided by board-certified radiologists and licensed technologists from TRA Medical Imaging.

Where will the mobile coach visit?
We travel throughout Pierce, Kitsap, Thurston, and surrounding counties. Our schedule includes community events, employer health fairs, and partnerships with local clinics and nonprofits.

Upcoming stops will be listed on our website’s Events page.

How will the coach be staffed?
It will be staffed by the same technologists who currently are performing mammograms at all of the TRA facilities.

What type of mammograms are offered?
We provide 3D digital screening mammograms — the same high-quality exams available at hospital or outpatient imaging centers.

How much does a screening cost?
Most insurance plans, including Medicaid and Medicare, cover annual screening mammograms at no cost to the patient. For uninsured individuals, MobileMammo NW offers financial assistance and community-funded screening programs.

Do I need a doctor’s referral?
A referral is not required for routine screening mammograms for most women age 40 and older. However, if you’re experiencing breast symptoms, please consult your healthcare provider first.

Who can schedule an appointment?
Women aged 40 and older who are due for their annual screening can schedule directly. For those under 40 or with specific risk factors, our scheduling team can guide you through next steps.

How do I schedule my mammogram?

We are not scheduling patients at this time. When scheduling becomes available, you will be able to book an appointment online or through our call center. Walk-up appointments may also be available during select community events, depending on capacity.

What is the process if I receive a positive mammogram and live in a rural area?

We will provide patient navigation services in every community we visit. This may include arranging transportation through a ride-sharing partner to the nearest partnering facility for follow-up imaging or care. We will not visit areas where we are unable to offer navigation support for next steps in care

How will I get my results?
Your images are read by board-certified TRA radiologists. Results are sent to you and your provider, typically within 7–10 business days.

What will ongoing fundraising be used for?
On going fundraising will be used to offer more services to those who have no insurance or other means to pay. We will never stop fundraising as we can go to more areas to help the underserved.
